How about local/regional categories (with cities in brackets by each name).
Then also have a 'national/international' category for those who are household names, and predominantly teach on the national/travelling circuit. Perhaps start with that section?

Hey everyone, thanks for the suggestions!
One remaining question is what to do with "pairs." The prob is that sometimes pairs break up and reconfigure, and some top people just teach with different partners on a regular basis (Bill Borgida, Sylvia Sykes, etc.). But listing Paul and Sharon separately just feels funny :P.
And with regards to the regional comment... where would we put Andrew Sutton, and Steven and Virginie and folks like them that don't really seem to have a home base. They don't quite fit a 'region'!
So many challenges...

I would suggest by region, then by city, then alphabetically. And including website if it exists. Otherwise e-mail (only if approved by the teacher)

as a site user it would be good to know who teaches locally /regionaly first...
Then as I get better I'd like to know those who teach on a national or global scale.
Alpa order is pretty useless to me. Thinking of who's who or YP listing.

What I would do is list each instructor individually and add that instructor's regular partner in brackets. I really don't think that dividing instructors by region will help that much in organizing the list becuase many people (especially europeans) don't know where most instuctors are based. The ideal situation would be to have two lists; one solely based on alphabetical sorting and the other based on region. But if I would have to choose I would go for the alphabetical list.

Little Javascript to order them randomly ;) Just to be fair.

I think alphabetically would be best. With location abbr. in brackets behind. (State, country F.ex: John & Jane Smith (MN, USA) Ola Nordmann (Trondheim, Norway) Just to be clear. None of these _are_ in fact instructors :) -Svenn-

I really want a private leson with Fred Astaire, but the contact information and web site above doesn't seem to work. Could you please fix it or help me get in touch with him? I really enjoy watching his dancing in the movies and I'm really happy to see that he's still teaching. Thank you for a great web site I really like it and I think I want to learn this Lindy Hop ballroom dance you seem so intersted in. Maybe you could recommend a private teacher for that as weel?

I was thinking that it would be okay to list the instructors who don't necessarily have a region under the national instructors list. That's not saying that necessarily each of them are as qualified as the other, rather that they travel to teach most weeks out of the year rather than teach in one specific region.
